A tribute to the Tay
The river Tay is a familiar and welcome sight to most Dundee residents. And it’s often a feature of our groups too-whether it’s the Wednesday walking group strolling down the waterfront or the gardening group gazing out across the Tay from our Dundee Law allotment! So it was the natural choice of theme for our creative groups to create an exhibition around.
Our art project group recreated that iconic view of the river Tay as you approach the city from Fife with a selkie gazing out over the water. This serves as a great centerpiece for our exhibition alongside a seal perched on the rocks. The group had great fun making this piece and it shows! Whilst the road bridge features in this work it is the rail bridge that is the focus of our local history group’s work. They have produced a fascinating display featuring a poem about the Tay bridge disaster and a recreation of the falling train carriage. This was the result of many weeks of research in Central Library’s archive!
“Beautiful work from all involved! Love the variety and different skills”
Our craft group had a go at wet felting for the first time and created some beautiful pieces inspired by the Tay. Some of their work featured the bridge whilst others had the nature and wildlife of the Tay as it’s theme. The nature of the Tay was also featured in pieces by our creative writing group. The famous Tay whale made an appearance as did reflections on what the river means to those who live alongside it. And of course we were delighted to have a message in a bottle bob up too!
“Inspiring..creative..diverse!”
It’s fantastic to see, for the first time, all of the work created by our groups showcased together. The sense of achievement felt by those whose work is featured helps to improve their wellbeing and serves as an inspiration to all of us!
